Wichita’s North YMCA will be renamed later this summer to recognize the Greater Wichita YMCA president and CEO, Dennis Schoenebeck.

Schoenebeck, who has been in his position for nearly 25 years, is the longest-serving president and CEO since the organization was founded in 1885, according to a news release Thursday from the YMCA.

A new sign for the Dennis Schoenebeck North YMCA – located at 3330 N. Woodlawn, just off K-96 – will be installed at the end of the summer.

When Schoenebeck became president and CEO, the Y had three locations and 135 employees, and served 20,000 visitors a year, the news release said.

It has expanded to eight facilities and 1,400 employees, and now serves 20,000 people each day. More than two of three Wichita children participate in YMCA activities, which include child care, camping, urban outreach programs and healthy lifestyle activities.

Schoenebeck retires Jan. 1, 2016.
