10-year-old girl wounded during apparent accidental shooting, Wichita police say

The Wichita Police Department said it’s investigating “what appears to be an accidental shooting” of a 10-year-old girl Wednesday in a west Wichita home.

Police were called at around 10:35 p.m. to a home in the 600 block of South Saint Paul, near Maple and Edwards. The girl had been shot in the upper body and was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, Officer Kevin Wheeler said in a statement.

“The investigation revealed that a 38-year-old male was handling a gun in a bedroom while (the girl) was in an adjoining bathroom,” Wheeler said. “While he was handling the gun, it went off, striking the 10-year-old. The girl’s 35-year-old mother was also in the bedroom with the 38-year-old, but she was not injured.”

The shooting is under investigation.
