Projects will close some Kellogg ramps at I-135 and I-235 for weeks

Tens of thousands of Wichita commuters could be affected by a couple of Kansas Department of Transportation projects in heavily-traveled areas.

The projects will close ramps on Kellogg at I-235 and I-135.

The ramp from eastbound Kellogg to southbound I-235 is scheduled to close Tuesday while bridge repairs are performed. The closure is expected to last roughly seven weeks. The project could be completed by Labor Day weekend, which is the first weekend of September, if “no extreme weather or unanticipated repair problems occur,” KDOT said in a news release.

KDOT says that to detour around the construction, drivers should “exit at West Street, use the turnaround onto westbound (Kellogg) then the exit ramp to southbound I-235.”

More than 80,000 vehicles travel through that area daily, according to KDOT.

Wichita-based Wildcat Construction is the lead contractor on the $124,652 project, which includes deck patching, expansion joint replacement and the repair of the abutment on the east end of the bridge.

Farther east, the ramps from Kellogg to northbound I-135 will be closed from 7 p.m. on Fridays until “as late as” 6 a.m. on Wednesdays from July 17 through Sept. 16 while work is performed on I-135.

KDOT says a detour will send Kellogg traffic to the Lincoln exit and then to the northbound I-135 entrance ramp.

The work is on northbound I-135 between Kellogg and Central and traffic in that span could be reduced to a single lane during part of the project. Ramps at First and Second are “likely to be closed” while work is completed on the right lane and adjacent ramp lanes.

Repairs to the highway include deck patching and expansion joint replacements. The ramps from Kellogg to I-135 are expected to be closed again when an overlay and striping are done at a later time.

Oklahoma-based PbX Corp. is the contractor on the roughly $7.7 million KDOT project.
