Toddler drowned in south Wichita neighborhood swimming pool

A 2-year-old boy drowned in a south Wichita swimming pool Tuesday night, Wichita police said in a news release.

Police say the toddler “managed to by-pass the fence surrounding the pool, and fell into the water.” The boy was in the neighborhood, in the 1900 block of East 54th Street South, with his father and older 4-year-old brother at the time.

Someone saw the boy floating in the water and called 911. Police officers responded to the address, which is in a mobile home park, around 9:30 p.m.

Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Services staff and members of the Wichita Fire Department pulled the 2-year-old out of the pool and tried to save his life. But the boy died, police said.

Police called the drowning a “tragic incident” and said the investigation into the case is ongoing.
