You can get a new friend for just $25 this Saturday at the Kansas Humane Society

Since the coronavirus pandemic hit in early spring, the Kansas Humane Society has had an interesting problem — people started staying home and wanted to share their lives with furry friends.

“As animals are coming in they are getting adopted pretty much immediately which is really wonderful for the animals because they’re not going through all of that shelter stress,” said Ericka Goering, director of marketing and communications.

This Saturday, they are hoping to adopt out even more. The Humane Society is drastically reducing adoption fees through the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters event.

Adult dogs, kittens and tween cats will have a $25 adoption fee. Adult cats are Pick Your Price, as always. Puppies and high profile pets (like a young Labradoodle, for example) are excluded. There is normally an adoption fee of $180 or lower for an adult dog (depending on how long the dog has been in the shelter) and $75 for kittens.

The event begins on July 11 at 11 a.m. and lasts until 6 p.m. or until the last animal is adopted that day. While it is hard to predict how many animals they will have for adoption on Saturday but they think it could be around 20 dogs and 20 cats.

Masks will be required in the building at all times and a limited number of guests will be allowed in the building at once.

There will be no dog-to-dog introductions that day so, “Please leave your dogs at home,” said Goering.

You can view all of the animals online at www.kshumane.org. The shelter is located at 3313 N. Hillside.
