Cheney Lake under blue-green algae warning ahead of Fourth of July weekend

Cheney Lake was upgraded to a warning for blue-green algae ahead of the Fourth of July weekend.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued public health advisories for 11 lakes in the state due to blue-green algae on Thursday.

Four lakes are under warnings:

  • Cheney Lake in Reno, Kingman and Sedgwick counties
  • Gathering Pond at Milford Reservoir in Geary County
  • Peter Pan Pond in Lyon County
  • Marion Lake in Marion County

Seven lakes are under watches:

  • Mission Lake in Brown County
  • Lake Perry Zone C and Zone D in Jefferson County
  • Rock Garden Pond in Shawnee County
  • Washington County State Fishing Lake in Washington County
  • Lovewell Reservoir in Jewell County
  • Marion Reservoir in Marion County
  • Norton Lake (Sebelius) in Norton County

Warnings for blue-green algae mean that lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock and contact with the water should be avoided. Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed.
