Minnesota man killed on Turnpike hit deer then was struck by SUV, highway patrol says
The Kansas Highway Patrol said a crash on the Kansas Turnpike in Douglas County that killed a Minnesota man early Sunday morning happened after the man’s vehicle hit a deer and then was struck by an SUV.
A highway patrol crash report says David Lee Woelfle, 50, of Lino Lakes, Minnesota, lost control of the 2019 Ram Promaster he was driving and struck a Turnpike barrier wall after he hit a deer. The Ram Promaster had been stopped in one of the highway lanes, facing south, when an eastbound 2002 GMC Yukon ran into its passenger side, the report says.
The wreck occurred at about 2:05 a.m. The crash site is between the Topeka and Lawrence service areas.
The SUV’s driver, a 36-year-old Shawnee woman, reportedly didn’t see the Promaster, the highway patrol crash report says. Woelfe died in the collision.
The SUV’s driver and her passenger, a 36-year-old Edwardsville man, went to a nearby hospital for treatment of possible injuries, the highway patrol report says.
