State health officials urge people at Harvey County RV resort to boil their water

State health officials say people at a Harvey County resort should boil their water until further notice.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Monday cautioned people at Spring Lake RV Resort and Campgrounds in Halstead to boil their water due to “a loss of pressure” during maintenance of water systems, according to an emailed news release. The resort, 1308 S. Spring Lake Rd., is 12 miles west of Newton on Highway 50. It’s about 38 miles north and slightly west of Wichita.

“Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine (and) residual and bacterial contamination,” the KHDE said in an emailed news release. The advisory went into effect Monday, agency spokeswoman Kristi Zears wrote.

People at that location are encouraged to:

  • Flush water lines by letting water run from the tap until it’s clear if it looks dirty
  • Boil water for one minute before using it for drinking or food preparation
  • Throw out ice cubes made with a household automatic ice maker
  • Disinfect dishes and surfaces that touch food by immersing them for one minute in a mixture of one gallon clean tap water and 1 teaspoon unscented household bleach
  • Supervise children who are bathing to ensure they don’t ingest any water; anyone with cuts or severe rashes should consider talking to their doctor
  • Use bottled water if concerned

Water users can pose questions about the advisory at 785-296-5514, or by visiting the KDHE’s consumer information page at www.kdheks.gov/pws/emergencyresponse/water_disruption.htm.

Restaurants and food establishments that have questions about how the advisory impacts them can contact the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s food safety & lodging program at kda.fsl@ks.gov or 785-564-6767.
