Driver dies in Sedgwick County crash after running stop sign and getting hit by semi

A Kansas woman died Wednesday afternoon after her vehicle did not stop at a stop sign and was hit by a semi in southwest Sedgwick County, state troopers said.

Emergency crews were called to an injury accident at around 1:05 p.m. to the area of K-42 and 119th Street West, the Kansas Highway Patrol said in a crash report. They found a two-vehicle wreck, and one person was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators determined a 2002 Ford Escape was southbound on 119th Street West when it approached the intersection with K-42 and ran the stop sign, the KHP report states. An eastbound 2010 Kenworth semi pulling a flatbed trailer collided with the passenger side of the SUV.

Troopers wrote that the driver of the SUV, Stephanie Y. Diell, 45, of Dodge City, was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, where she died. The 72-year-old Tulsa man driving the semi had no apparent injury.

The crash happened as the Wichita area is under a winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service. As of Wednesday afternoon, 2 inches of snow had been recorded in the city.
