Wichita sets new record high temperature for Christmas Day

This year, Wichita didn’t have a white Christmas. The city set a record-high temperature instead.

The National Weather Service tweeted Wednesday afternoon that the city had surpassed the Christmas Day record high of 67 degrees, set in 2016. Unseasonably warm weather and sunny skies helped the temperature reach a balmy 68 degrees by 2:20 p.m.

Wichita tied the old record at 1:39 p.m.

Meteorologists tweeted that the temperature could inch up “by another degree or so” before nightfall. Christmas Day highs throughout the region were expected to be 20 to 25 degrees above normal.

The weather is expected to cool off Thursday — with forecasted highs in the upper 40s — and throughout the weekend. Locally heavy rain is possible late Friday into Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
