Motorcycle driver hurt in Monday fatal collision remains critical

The driver of a motorcycle involved in a two-vehicle collision Monday night near Wichita State University remains in critical condition at a local hospital.

Willie Bryant was driving north on Oliver on a 2006 Kawasaki shortly after 9:30 p.m. Monday when he collided with an Oldsmobile Cutlass turning left at 21st Street from southbound Oliver, according to police.

Lavica Mewborn, 45, who was a passenger on the motorcycle, was ejected in the collision and pronounced dead at the scene., according to a police report on the collision. Bryant, who was also ejected, was taken to Wesley Medical Center for treatment.

The police report indicated there were two people in the Oldsmobile at the time of the collision. They were not injured.

The 17-year-old driver of the Oldsmobile was taken to City Hall for questioning, but police on Tuesday said there was no indication criminal charges are likely in connection with the incident.

Neither speed nor alcohol played a role in the collision, police have said.
