Toddler in pediatric intensive care with bruises, bleeding on brain

A toddler brought to a local hospital with flu-like symptoms late Monday afternoon was placed into protective custody and admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit after he was found to have bleeding on the brain in more than one location, police said.

The boy was brought to Wesley Medical Center by his step-grandmother, according to a police report on the incident. Authorities were notified shortly after 6:15 p.m. when doctors found bruises on his body and bleeding in his brain.

The child lives in the Valley Center area, Lt. James Espinoza said. The Exploited and Missing Child Unit has begun an investigation into how the injuries occurred.

No arrests have been made, Espinoza said.
