Infant hospitalized, brother in protective custody

A 5-month-old girl is hospitalized and her older brother in protective custody as Wichita police investigate a possible case of child abuse, authorities said Monday.

The infant’s 20-year-old mother brought the child to Galichia Hospital early Saturday morning, Lt. James Espinoza said. When hospital staff asked how the injuries occurred, the mother offered “insufficient explanations,” according to a police report on the case.

Further questioning revealed the mother was at work and returned home to discover the child’s injuries, Espinoza said. The child’s father was watching her and her 3-year-old brother that night.

The infant was transferred to Wesley Medical Center, where she is in serious condition. She has two broken ribs that show signs of healing as well as possible bleeding on the brain, the police report said.

The Exploited and Missing Child Unit is investigating, Espinoza said. No arrests had been made in the case as of Monday.
