Wichita pools ready for summer to arrive
When Wichita’s Park and Recreation Department officially opens nine outdoor pools across the city on Tuesday, undoubtedly the first summer visitors will be suffering from goosebumps, blue lips and chattering teeth.
The weather forecast for this week includes plenty of gray skies, cool weather and rain.
But as the summer progresses, Wichita’s outdoor pools are estimated to each be visited by more than 20,000 people, said Toy Houtman, director of Park and Recreation.
“Some pools will average more than others,” he said.
Pool rates for ages 17 and under are $2; adults are $3. The family plan rate for six people, including one adult, is $8. Summer season passes are $150 for four family members and $50 for an individual.
▪ In addition, the area YMCAs have waterparks that are open daily from 1 to 7 p.m. through Aug. 14 and on weekends only from 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 15-Sept. 6. On holidays – such as July 4 and Labor Day – the waterparks are open from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The area YMCAs with waterparks are at Andover and in Wichita at North, Northwest and Richard A. Devore South.
Access to all four waterparks is free with a YMCA membership or $10 a day for nonmembers and $18 a day for a family.
▪ Derby’s Rock River Rapids opened Monday and runs through Aug. 12. Season passes are $70. Cost is $8 a day for a child up to 17 years old, $9 for adults.
▪ On the final Friday of each month, the Genesis Health Club on Rock Road is hosting an evening where club members are allowed to bring as many guests as they like for free. There will be a different theme each time.
The 2015 summer promises to provide plenty of swimming opportunities.
“This is ramping up to be our busiest time of the year,” said Troy Houtman, Park and Recreation director. “We are working hard to make sure people have fun. We train our lifeguards to make sure they are ready and prepared. Our pools are ready to go.”
