A Goddard student was killed in a crash on an icy road before school Tuesday, officials said.
Emergency crews were called at around 7:25 a.m. to a wreck just west of 21st North and 167th West, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Capt. David Mattingly said in a release.
Deputies found Conner J. Richuber unresponsive, Mattingly said. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and Richuber was pronounced dead at the scene. The 17-year-old boy was a student at Goddard High School, the school district said.
“As a school community, we want to extend our thoughts and prayers to Conner Richuber’s family during this difficult time,” said Goddard High School principal Doug Bridwell in a written statement. “Our crisis team have been available to support students and staff individually, or in groups, today and throughout the weeks to come.”
A 55-year-old man was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators determined that Richuber’s blue 1995 Chevrolet pickup likely crossed over the center line and crashed into a gold 2013 GMC Yukon XL, driven by the 55-year-old man, the release said. Richuber had been driving westbound on 21st Street, and the SUV’s driver was going eastbound.
Icy road conditions and speed could have been contributing factors to the crash, which is still under investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
