Riverside Elementary evacuated after staff notices gas smell

Riverside Elementary at 1001 Porter Street was evacuated Thursday afternoon, the last day of school for the year, because of a gas odor smelled by the staff, the school’s principal said in a recorded phone message to parents.

Students were evacuated to the nearby Riverside Christian Church at 1001 N. Litchfield. No one was injured.

Parents should pick up their children at the church, the school district said on Twitter. Students ride the bus home will be transported as scheduled.

The school will not be reopened on Thursday. If it is cleared to reopen on on Friday, parents can pick up their children’s items from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday.
