YMCA opening new indoor soccer fields at south branch
The Greater Wichita YMCA will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Thursday for its new $5 million indoor soccer fields, 3405 S. Meridian.
Tours of the 65,000-square-foot facility also will be held. The indoor turf fields – two full size or six youth size – are part of the Farha Sport Center, which includes basketball and volleyball courts in a separate complex.
The buildings are on the 60-acre campus of the Y’s south branch.
The first youth games at the complex will be held Saturday. A men’s five-on-five tournament will be held later in the day, said Josh Whitson, the Y’s director of sports initiatives.
The Y may later expand to include lacrosse and flag football at the facility, he said.
The complex also will house a sport performance training area. AthleteFIT, an Overland Park company, is setting up the year-round program and training the Y’s staff, Whitson said.
