Blood drive to honor Wichita firefighter who died of brain tumor

A Wichita firefighter who succumbed to a brain tumor last July will be remembered Monday at a blood drive in Colwich.

Donors are asked to call 1-800-RED-CROSS or go to www.redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment for the drive, set for 2:30 to 7 p.m. at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 19230 W. 29th St. N. in Colwich. The event marks the birthday of Nathan Winter, who died July 30, 2013, after battling the tumor for four years.

He received his diagnosis in 2009.

“We chose the date of this blood drive to be right around Nathan’s birthday” on Sept. 14, Nathan’s mother, Nancy Winter, said in a news release announcing the blood drive.

“We think it’s a great way to remember our son and help our community.”

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Donors must be at least 17 years old or 16 with a parent’s consent, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.

Some may also be subject to a height requirement.
