Shots fired at McDonald’s next to Wichita State University

Police are investigating a drive-by shooting at the McDonald’s restaurant next to the Wichita State University campus Monday night.

A 21-year-old man sitting in his car at the McDonald’s at 1811 N. Hillside called 911 at about 9 p.m. Monday to report hearing shots fired and that one bullet apparently hit his vehicle, Lt. James Espinoza said. The man said he saw a stranger with a gun in a car driving south on Hillside and then turning east on 17th Street.

Other witnesses saw two men run into the McDonald’s at the time of the shooting, Espinoza said. After waiting for several minutes, they ran north on Hillside.

“We don’t know if they were the intended targets or what people were,” Espinoza said.

Officers responding to the scene found evidence of the shooting in the street. One bullet hit the first caller’s tire, Espinoza said.

The shooting suspect was a passenger in a dark four-door sedan, he said. Several shots were fired. No injuries were reported.
