Kansas Health Summit on Breastfeeding set for Sept. 25

The Kansas Health Foundation and United Methodist Health Ministry Fund are hosting the Kansas Health Summit on Breastfeeding from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 25 at the Kansas Leadership Center and KHF Conference Center, 325 E. Douglas.

The summit is open to the public and health care professionals. It is free to attend.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2014 Breastfeeding Report Card, which has 2011 data, 77.4 percent of Kansas babies have ever been breastfed, compared to the national average of 79.2 percent. The Kansas averages for breastfeeding at 3, 6 and 12 months are also below the national average.

Speakers at the summit include Secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Robert Moser; physician Todd Wolynn, CEO of the National Breastfeeding Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Kathy Walker, lactation services manager at Wesley Medical Center.

The summit will be followed by a reception at Wesley Medical Center from 5:45 to 7 p.m.
