3 kids in protective custody after toddler found wandering neighborhood

Three children were taken into protective custody by police Thursday afternoon after a toddler was spotted by a neighbor wandering around wearing only a soiled diaper.

Officers responding to the report in the area of Yale and Osie at about 4 p.m. found that the child had been taken in by a concerned neighbor, Wichita police Lt. James Espinoza said. The officers learned that the child lived in the 1700 block of Yale, southeast of Harry and Hillside, and found a father at home with two other children.

“The father was asleep and did not really know what was going on,” Espinoza said.

Officers found no food in the house, he said.

“Neighbors describe the house and children to always be dirty,” Espinoza said.

Their 39-year-old father did not know where the mother of the children was. The 2-year-old boy who had wandered outside was taken into protective custody, along with his 9-year-old sister and 8-year-old brother.

No arrests have been made in the case, which remains under investigation, Espinoza said.
