The fire was reported shortly before 2:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of East Jump. That’s southeast of Pawnee and Hydraulic.
The first crews to arrive reported seeing smoke rising from a duplex.
Wichita fire Capt. Pete Ridder said nine crews responded to a call of smoke billowing from a fourplex apartment. One person was found inside and taken to the hospital in critical condition for smoke inhalation and minor burns.
Emergency radio traffic between an ambulance and Via Christi Hospital St. Francis indicated the victim is a 37-year-old man who suffered smoke inhalation and burns to his face.
The blaze was declared out less than a half-hour after crews arrived.
The fire was contained mostly to one room with only smoke damage to connecting apartments, Ridder said. Windows were broken to allow smoke and gasses to escape.
The Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance for three or four adults and their pets following the apartment fire.
