A man in his mid-30s was killed Sunday afternoon in an accident near 13th and Maize Road in northwest Wichita.

The man was speeding south on Maize Road driving a white Mustang, according to Wichita police Sgt. Joseph Kennedy at the scene. The driver hit a curb, then crossed the center line, losing control of the Mustang, Kennedy said.

The Mustang struck two other vehicles. The vehicles then caught fire, Kennedy said.

Three people were injured in the accident.

Maize Road from 13th to Central was closed for several hours Sunday afternoon as police investigated the accident. It was reopened shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday.

“We don’t have any indication what would cause a collision,” Kennedy said. “We will determine that at a later time through the investigative process whether or not it may have been alcohol or drug related.”

Wichita police were searching for a light-blue Nissan 300ZX that was seen in the area at the time of the collision, Kennedy said.

The driver of a gray Ford Fusion and the driver and passenger of a Land Rover were taken to a hospital, one with serious injuries.

The accident site was 1277 N. Maize Road.

“We were very lucky no one else was killed,” Kennedy said.
