6 people hit deer in Sedgwick County on Monday

Six drivers in Sedgwick County hit deer on Monday, according to accident reports from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

The Kansas Highway Patrol has said the peak time for deer wrecks is from October to December, which coincides with mating season and the quest for a more secure habitat.

On Monday:

▪ A woman was westbound in the 15000 block of East Pawnee at about 7 a.m. when she hit a deer that was in the road.

▪ A man was traveling in the 24000 block of Highway 42 at 9:10 a.m. when he hit a deer, killing it. His vehicle had to be towed.

▪ One driver was eastbound in the 33000 block of West 15th just before 4 p.m. when a deer jumped in the road and they collided. The woman wasn’t injured.

▪ At 5 p.m., a driver was northbound on I-135 in Park City when a deer entered the road. His vehicle was towed.

▪ About 30 minutes later, a woman was southbound in the 1600 block of North 199th Street when a deer entered the road, causing her to hit it.

▪ A man was westbound in the 18000 block of West 95th Street at around 7:30 p.m. when a deer entered the road. He was unable to stop and hit the deer. He took the deer from the scene.

The greatest number of deer-vehicle crashes are in mid-November.

In addition to mating season, deer are seeking new food sources and shelter as crops are harvested and the leaves fall from trees and shrubs.

If you encounter a deer in the road, Kansas Highway Patrol urges you to avoid making exaggerated maneuvers, as a bad situation may become even worse.

“If you are unfortunate enough to have a deer enter the highway in front of your car, it is best to hit the animal and not swerve to avoid it,” said Lt. Adam Winters of Kansas Highway Patrol. “Often we find more serious crashes occur when you swerve to miss the deer, potentially losing control of your vehicle, leaving the road or veering into oncoming traffic.”
