Death of todder struck in driveway ruled accidental

The death of a toddler who was hit by a vehicle last weekend has been ruled accidental, authorities said Wednesday.

A 26-year-old man was working on a vehicle in the driveway of his residence in the 14600 block of East 63rd Street South at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Lt. Lin Dehning said in a prepared statement. That’s a few miles west of Rose Hill.

While moving the vehicle, the man struck his 22-month-old son, Dehning said. The boy was critically injured and immediately transported to an emergency room in Derby by family members.

He was later transferred to a Wichita hospital, where he died Monday morning.

“After an extensive investigation by detectives and forensic investigators with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, there was nothing found to indicate that this was anything other than a tragic accident,” Dehning said.
