KDOT employee critically injured when struck in Newton

A Kansas Department of Transportation worker remained in critical condition at a Wichita hospital, hours after being struck by a van in Newton Tuesday.

Nathan Talcott, 42, of Halstead was standing next to a legally parked pickup on the right shoulder of I-135 between First and Broadway when he was struck by a southbound van shortly before noon, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The impact slammed into the side of the pickup. He was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, where a hospital employee confirmed that he was in critical condition Tuesday night.

A Facebook post by a former relative by marriage reported he underwent surgery earlier in the day.

The driver of the van was a 52-year-old man from Wichita, according to the highway patrol. He was not injured in the collision.
