The Eagle wins 9 press club awards, including 1st place for breaking news
The Eagle won nine awards at the Kansas City Press Club’s Heart of America awards for 2016 on Saturday, including first place for its breaking news coverage after Cedric Ford opened fire on Excel Industries.
The first place award for breaking news was for the entire staff’s work on four different articles on Feb. 25, 2016. “Well-done piece of work on deadline,” wrote one of the judges.
Reporter Roy Wenzl won first place in the category of public service project for his article on homeless moms in Wichita trying to raise their children in cars. Wenzl also won a second place award for profile writing for his love story about Tracey and Lolita Rapp coping with Tracey’s debilitating illness.
Reporter Oliver Morrison won first place for feature writing for his story about how Derby resident Julie Dombo began to rebuild her life after being shot in a robbery and becoming a quadruple amputee. Photojournalist Travis Heying won first place in photojournalism feature for his video profiling how Dombo’s life had changed.
Reporter Bryan Lowry, now at the Kansas City Star, won second place in general reporting for his investigation into which Kansas lawmakers benefited from the tax cuts to businesses. “Tax law is a tough subject to entice readers,” wrote the judge. “Excellent, explanatory and balanced reporting.”
Photojournalist Fernando Salazar won third place in photojournalism breaking news for his video capturing a protest in Wichita’s streets over police shootings, and second place in photojournalism sports for another video about how the family of Kaiser Carlile was coping after Kaiser died from being hit by a baseball bat at the National Baseball Congress World Series.
Photojournalist Jaime Green won second place in photojournalism feature for her photo of Batman hanging from a rope outside a patient’s window at the opening of the Children’s Hospital.
