Hutchinson firefighter injured in blaze as ceiling collapses

A Hutchinson firefighter was injured while battling a house fire on Friday night.

The firefighter was inside a house at 3118 North Hendricks when part of an interior ceiling collapsed onto him, knocking him down, Fire Chief Steven Beer said in a statement posted on the department’s Facebook page.

The firefighter was able to escape the house under his own power and was evaluated by Reno County EMS before being released, Beer said.

The fire started on the rear wood patio deck of the house and was reported just after 6 p.m. The blaze spread into the basement, first floor and attic space, causing extensive damage, Beer said.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control. No one was home when the fire broke out, he said. A cause and damage estimate have not been released.
