Along the pavement of Douglas on Sunday, a stream of people in rainbow garments cheered as pop music blared from speakers.

They were there for Wichita’s Equality March, one of 116 sister marches spanning five countries. The marches were intended to promote equality and address concerns of the LGBT community.

“I support everything that this march supports: equality for everyone, peace,” said 15-year-old Pax Koenig Weber. “This march isn’t just for the LBGT community, this march is for everyone.”

Leigh Carlson Burgess, 62, held a rainbow flag in one hand and a cardboard sign in another that said “Equal Rights for All.” As an ordained Christian minister who officiates at same-sex weddings, Burgess remembered a time when she would marry same-sex couples before it was legal.

“It’s important to me that all people are treated with dignity and respect and that all people who love one another are able to enjoy the same benefits as heterosexual people,” Burgess said.

Toward the back of the procession stood Shawn Henderson, a retired mechanic and Navy veteran. Holding two large rainbow flags, Henderson spoke to passers-by in cars.

“Honk if you’re happy!” she yelled. As drivers obliged, a smile spread across her face.

“God is good,” she said.

The 52-year-old has seen change regarding the LGBT community during her lifetime.

Henderson said she was shunned by churches throughout her life. Doctors had tried to change her sexuality by giving her shots and pills and even suggesting brain surgery.

“Today, to see my people out here getting honks of support and love – I’m 52 years old, I’ve lived in the closet most of my life,” Henderson said, tears filling her eyes.

Nolin Christensen, 57, the coordinator of the march, was pleased with the turnout.

“Until we have equality for everyone, no one has equality,” Christensen said.

Wichitans will have another chance to show support for the LGBT community during the Wichita Pride Parade on June 18 from 1 to 2 p.m.
