Wichita Fire Chief Ron Blackwell, who has held the top job in the department for nearly 10 years, will retire in July.

In a letter sent to the city announcing his plans to retire, Blackwell acknowledged he had mixed emotions.

“While I am happily looking forward to retirement, there are many things I will miss. Among them are the camaraderie and support of civilian and uniform members of the department,” Blackwell wrote.

The letter was posted on the Kansas State Firefighters Association’s news blog.

Blackwell’s last day as chief will be July 14.
