Austrian man’s WWII-era discovery prompts thank you to Kansas town
An old flour sack discovered in a European man’s home led to a thank you for a Kansas town.
The Newton Police Department in a Facebook post said it was contacted Friday by an Austrian man who found the American Flours Inc. sack in his basement. He “wanted our help in thanking the people of Newton, KS who helped provide for his family during WWII,” police said in the post, which included a photograph of the sack.
The sack once held 50 kilograms of hard wheat flour. It is stamped with the name and location of the flour company, “Austria” and a stars-and-stripes emblem surrounding the phrase “Strength for the free world.”
Newton’s current flour mill, Horizon Milling, is at 300 E. Broadway.
