A stretch of I-235 will be closed to west Wichita drivers next weekend.

The interstate will be closed between Zoo Boulevard and the interchange with K-96 and Meridian during most of May 20 and May 21, according to a news release from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

It’s part of a state project to rebuild the 25th Street bridge over the highway. The bridge work over the highway will include installing concrete support beams.

The closure should begin as early as 6 a.m. on May 20. KDOT says all lanes should be reopened by 7 p.m. on May 21.

A signed detour will direct northbound drivers from Zoo Blvd., west to 21st Street and onto Ridge Road toward K-96. That path is the same detour for southbound traffic.

“When the planned detour is no longer necessary, traffic on I-235 will return to single lane for each direction through the construction zone,” according to the news release.
