Unattended cooking is being blamed for a fire that injured a man and caused an estimated $30,000 in damage to an apartment building early Monday, officials said.

The fire was reported shortly before 1:20 a.m. on Monday in the 1100 block of North Kansas, a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher said. That’s just east of I-135 and just north of Ninth Street.

A man was taken to the burn unit at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, where he was treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns before being released, Wichita Fire Marshal Brad Crisp said. No other injuries were reported.

Fire crews needed less than an hour to extinguish the fire, the dispatcher said.

The blaze caused $25,000 damage to the structure and $5,000 to its contents, Crisp said.
