Traffic enforcement project nets 13 DUIs, hundreds of citations

Wichita police issued more than 650 citations during a special traffic enforcement program spanning more than two weeks.

The state-funded Special Traffic Enforcement Program began Aug. 15 and ended on Labor Day, Lt. James Espinoza said. Data collected from three of the city’s four police bureaus showed 580 traffic stops were made during that time.

Those stops resulted in 669 citations, including 246 for speeding, 122 for seat belt violations and 13 for driving under the influence.

Those statistics do not include activity in east Wichita, Espinoza said, because statistics from Patrol East have not yet been submitted.

The STEP project was part of a national enhanced traffic enforcement program targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
