Man dies in southwest Sedgwick County collision

A 78-year-old man was killed in a two-car crash southwest of Wichita on Sunday, authorities said.

Hoyt Sunderland drove a Ford pickup south on 135th Street through the intersection with MacArthur. A Mazda Tribute driven by a 16-year-old collided with the pickup as it traveled west on MacArthur.

“The Ford pickup rolled once and Sunderland was ejected from the vehicle,” according to a news release from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were sent shortly after 11 a.m. to the intersection, where Sunderland was pronounced dead.

Sunderland did not stop at the MacArthur Road stop sign, the release said.

The teenager and a 15-year-old passenger in the Mazda were not injured.
