Man remains in critical condition with burns after apartment fire

A Via Christi Hospital St. Francis house supervisor said a man who sustained burns in an apartment fire in northeast Wichita on Saturday evening remained in critical condition on Sunday.

Firefighters responded to an apartment fire in the 2000 block of North Old Manor at The Timbers apartment complex shortly before 8 p.m., a Sedgwick County dispatcher said.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a 41-year-old man trapped inside the one-story apartment, the dispatcher said. Firefighters located the man in his bed, and Fire Battalion Chief Ernie Schuler said crews do not think the man was ambulatory.

Emergency medical services units transported the man to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in critical condition. The victim suffered second- to third-degree burns, Schuler said.

The fire caused $10,000 in structural damage and $5,000 in property damage, Schuler said.

Crews are still working to determine the cause of the fire, he said.
