A relative of a girl who died in a multiple stabbing Friday described her as a “very sweet little girl.”
Ronald Ray said the girl is the daughter of his son’s common-law wife. The mother, in her 20s, was in critical condition after being stabbed, Wichita police said. Police said the girl’s younger sister also was found stabbed Friday morning.
The girl who died was not Ray’s biological granddaughter, but he considered her to be his granddaughter, he said.
“She was a very sweet little girl.” She was around 6, he said.
Ray said that the younger girl, around age 4, was “doing OK” after with being found with stab wounds and wandering near 77th North and Ridge. The younger girl is his son’s biological daughter, Ray said.
Earlier Friday, police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said a girl between 5 and 7 years old died after receiving multiple stab wounds. She was found early Friday morning in a red Jeep at Lincoln and Oliver with a woman in her mid-20s who was reported to be in surgery with multiple stab wounds. The Jeep had collided with a van in a parking lot, police said.
Shortly before 10 a.m., Wichita police said they took into custody Hassan L. Wright, 47, who was described as a person of interest in the investigation.
Woodrow said police are dealing with a very large crime scene and still don’t know where the violence originated.
Police said they are searching for witnesses. Anyone with information should call 911 or can anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
