Teen threatens mother with knife after video game is taken away

A 14-year-old boy is being evaluated at a Wichita hospital after he brandished a knife and threatened to kill his mother after she took away his video game, police said.

The confrontation occurred at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1500 block of South Fern, Lt. James Espinoza said. That’s west of Seneca and south of Kellogg. A 35-year-old woman reported that her son stayed home from school and she grounded him from playing his video game.

She later walked in on him playing his video game in his bedroom, so she took it away from him. He became enraged and punched her several times, Espinoza said.

He then went to the kitchen, retrieved a knife and “made several threats he was going to kill her,” Espinoza said.

The mother then retreated to a bedroom with her 9-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter. They locked the door and the daughter called 911.

The teen was taken to a hospital for treatment of a cut to his hand, then transferred to Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph for a mental evaluation.
