Medicaid-expansion event in Wichita on Tuesday

A healthcare group that’s pushing for Medicaid expansion in Kansas will host a community event in Wichita on Tuesday.

Kansas is one of 19 states that has not expanded Medicaid, the health insurance system for people with low incomes or who are disabled. The forum will focus on how inaction on Medicaid expansion has affected jobs, the economy and access to health care.

The forum will take place Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Robert D. Love Downtown YMCA, 402 N. Market.

The Alliance for a Healthy Kansas, a newly formed group aimed at creating grassroots support for Medicaid expansion, organized the meeting.

Speakers include: Steve Coen, president and CEO of Kansas Health Foundation; Michael Mullins, president and CEO of Via Christi Health; Rickae Strack, an advanced-practice registered nurse at Health Core Clinic; Djuan Wash, juvenile justice advocate for the Kansas Appleseed Center for Law and Justice; Sheldon Weisgrau, director of the Health Reform Resource Project; and David Jordan, executive director of the Alliance for a Healthy Kansas.
