Newton names new fire chief
Newton has named a new fire department chief.
Deputy Chief Scott Metzler, a 26-year veteran of the department, will take over for Chief Mark Willis, who is retiring at the end of the week. The city’s Emergency Medical Service is also part of the fire department.
“I’m honored to carry on the outstanding tradition of excellence established by our past members,” Metzler said in a statement. “And I’m excited to move into the future with our current members as they share their talents and gifts in the service of our community.”
Metzler rose through the ranks in the department and has been deputy chief since 2012. He earned associate degrees from Hutchinson Community College, a bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University and a master’s degree from Baker University.
Last year, Metzler completed the Executive Fire Officer Program from the National Fire Academy. He led the implementation of a community paramedicine program in partnership with Newton Medical Center.
