Officer-involved shooting at 29th and Arkansas injures suspect

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story said the Johnson’s General Store that was robbed was in Park City. It's in Wichita.

A robbery suspect was in stable condition at a Wichita hospital Sunday night following a police pursuit and officer-involved shooting.

Wichita police were called to the intersection of 29th and Arkansas shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday when a caller reported to Sedgwick County 911 that the Johnson’s General Store at 53rd and Meridian had been robbed, according to Wichita Police Deputy Chief Gavin Seiler.

“Officers responded to that. As they were responding, the suspect in the robbery took off from the Johnson’s General, and one of the citizens there followed and was reporting to 911 the direction he was going,” Seiler said.

A Park City police officer, Sedgwick County sheriff’s officers and Wichita police officers were able to locate the suspect and pursued his vehicle to 29th and Arkansas.

Once at the intersection, Seiler said, the man ran from his vehicle.

As officers chased him, the man attempted to get into other vehicles that were stopped at the intersection waiting for the light to change.

“He was unsuccessful in getting into the first one but got into the second vehicle and was in the back seat of that vehicle when the officer engaged him,” Seiler said. “Shots were fired. The officer struck the individual.”

As the officer pursued the man on foot, the suspect ran through a residential area, Seiler said.

The man was taken into custody and was immediately transported to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, where he was listed in critical but stable condition following surgery.

“It was a foot pursuit in a very short amount of time,” Seiler said.

Seiler confirmed that two other people were traveling with the suspect when the vehicle was stopped by Wichita police. They were not injured, nor was the officer.

The investigation is ongoing, Seiler said, and more information is expected to be released Monday.
