Wichita school district opens COVID vaccination station for students, parents
The Wichita school district will offer free COVID vaccinations through this weekend for students, parents and any unvaccinated staff, officials said.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday clinics will be held at the district office, 903 S. Edgemoor.
The clinic hours are timed around school days, so pupils won’t have to miss class, officials said.
Thursday is a day off for students, so the clinic hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It will be open the same hours on Saturday.
The Friday clinic will be held after school from 4 to 7 p.m. and the Sunday hours will be from 1 to 4 p.m.
Depending on the response, the district may host additional vaccination opportunities.
The district is prepared to administer the Pfizer vaccine to students ages 5-11.
Pfizer’s vaccine was approved for use in that age group a week ago and Sedgwick County has inoculated more than 850 young children since.
The children’s shot is the same as the adult version, but the dosage is one third of the adult jab.
The children’s version is specifically packaged for pediatric use to avoid confusion between vials.
As with the adult version, children will need a second shot three weeks after the first to achieve maximum immunity to COVID.
Written parental permission is required for children under 18 to get the vaccine and they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when they get their shots.
Members of the school community can schedule a vaccination appointment at https://bit.ly/USD259Clinics. The required permission form for minors can also be downloaded there.
The county’s vaccine clinic will also be open on Veterans Day, Thursday, to accommodate school children and others who have the day off.
