Kansas releases new list of active COVID clusters. Is there one near you?
State public health officials have released an updated list of active coronavirus outbreak locations.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Wednesday named 39 of 219 active clusters of COVID-19 cases. It includes several outbreaks in the Wichita area, including two in Sedgwick County, four in Reno County and one in Butler County. The state reported 71 new clusters in the past week.
Clusters are generally defined as two or more cases of COVID-19 with a common place and time. The KDHE list identifies most types of outbreaks with five or more cases among Kansas residents with symptom onset dates in the last 14 days. The number of cases on the list only include cases within the last two weeks.
Locations are removed from the list once there are no longer five or more cases with symptom onset dates in the last two weeks. Home-based daycares and private events are excluded due to privacy concerns.
The full list of active cluster locations identified by the KDHE is available below, or online under the cluster summary tab of the health department’s dashboard at www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/160/COVID-19-in-Kansas.
The 219 active clusters account for 7,035 cases, 232 hospitalizations and 149 deaths. Total cases, hospitalizations and deaths are not listed for individual clusters.
“This publication is in keeping with the KDHE effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 disease by notifying the public of recent risk of exposure,” the agency’s policy states. “Notifications of this type are provided when the KDHE believes that the notification will benefit the public and aid in stopping the spread of the disease.”
Naming the locations is intended to provide “more transparency,” as well as “empower Kansans to be more proactive about assessing their own personal risk,” the KDHE website states.
The criteria kept about 82% of active clusters off the list. That meant locations were not identified for outbreaks at two bars, 23 colleges or universities, four correctional facilities, five government offices, seven group living facilities, eight health care facilities, 59 long-term care facilities, four meatpacking plants, 22 private businesses, 14 private events, four religious gatherings, 18 schools and 10 sports.
The deadliest outbreaks have been nursing homes and other care facilities, where the 78 active clusters account for 132 deaths. There have also been 10 deaths connected to ongoing clusters at meatpacking plants, one from a jail or prison, four from private businesses and two at health care facilities.
