Coronavirus updates: Kansas sees highest one-week total of new cases since May

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported 1,366 new COVID-19 cases and 11 more deaths on Friday, bringing the totals to 56,592 cases and 632 deaths.

The new cases bring the total to 4,307 for the week, the highest reported week since the KDHE switched to reporting on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on May 13. The only other weeks that broke the 4,000 case mark happened the last week of August and the first week of September.

The increase comes as the percent of emergency room visits for COVID-19-like Illness, or CLI, upticks for the first time in a few weeks. The CLI symptoms are fever with either cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.

The percent of visits with CLI hit a 2020 high of 6.7% the week that ended March 21. It then dropped to a 2020 low of 0.9% at the beginning of June before making a mountain shape through the beginning of September.

It went from 1% to 1.2% during the latest available week, which ended Sept. 12.

Sedgwick County sees additional death

The Sedgwick County Health Department reported 86 deaths on Friday, an increase of one from the day before.

There were 67 new cases for a total of 8,297. The majority of cases are in the 25-34 age range, where 1,705 cases, or 20.5%, have been reported. The 18-24 age range is second with 1,468 cases.
