Wichita COVID rates are improving, ZIP code data shows. The suburbs are getting worse
Coronavirus data from Sedgwick County’s ZIP code map shows that coronavirus indicators are getting better in Wichita and getting worse in suburban areas.
A comparison of COVID-19 cases and coronavirus tests uses public data released weekly by the Sedgwick County Health Department. The Eagle has tracked the data since June 29. The online ZIP code map’s data is updated on Mondays. It can be accessed at www.sedgwickcounty.org/covid-19/.
It shows that the rate of new cases compared to 10,000 population and the positive test rate both increased in July in ZIP codes in Wichita and those outside city limits. Both measures show higher rates in city ZIP codes.
But the city’s trends are improving while suburban areas in the county trends are worsening.
In comparing Wichita with the rest of the county, certain ZIP codes were excluded. Those ZIP codes were ones with very few tests among Sedgwick County residents and that have the majority of their population in other counties, such as the Rose Hill and Conway Springs ZIP codes. All Wichita ZIP codes are collectively included in the Wichita measurement, from 67202 to 67260, plus three ZIP codes that are in the city and include parts of Bel Aire and Park City.
With The Eagle’s first weekly report of increases on July 6, the Wichita ZIP codes collectively totaled 9.26 new cases per 10,000 population. The rest of the county totaled 2.39 new cases — less than a third of the city’s rate.
Both ZIP codes saw large increases in July as case numbers exploded in the county, peaking on July 27 at 21.25 new cases in Wichita and 8.37 new cases in the rest of the county. That was a 129% increase in city ZIP codes and a 250% increase in the suburbs.
By Monday, Wichita’s rate had dropped to 8.50 new cases per 10,000 population, which is less than when The Eagle started tracking ZIP code data. The rate has decreased for two weeks in a row.
The rest of the county’s ZIP codes collectively dipped at the start of August, but have increased for three weeks in a row. Monday’s rate in the suburbs was 7.48 new cases.
The weekly positive test rate followed similar paths. On July 6, it was 10.06% in the city and 3.47% in the rest of the county. The rates peaked on July 27 at 17.27% in Wichita and 10.71% in the suburbs.
Since then, Wichita’s rate has seen more improvement. On Monday it was 10.26% in the city and 9.79% in the suburbs.
Monday’s rates were worse in both the city and the suburbs, but a graph of the weekly rates shows that over the last month Wichita has trended better while the rest of the county has trended worse.
A full list of ZIP codes in Sedgwick County is available below with totals as of Monday and increases since the last week. The report includes the population, number of tests administered, confirmed cases and testing and case rates per 10,000 people.
The county’s online map does not list the number of new tests, new cases, positive test percentage or the rate of cases per 10,000 population. The Eagle calculated those values using the number of cases listed in county data on Monday and Aug. 31.
Testing rates based on 20 or fewer tests are considered unreliable by the county health department and are not included in the city versus suburbs comparison. For total tests and total confirmed cases, if a ZIP code has five or fewer of either category, the county does not report the exact number.
Two ZIP codes — for McConnell Air Force Base and Wichita State University — do not have data because they have no population. County officials have said that members of the military who live in on-base housing are included in the surrounding 67210 ZIP code.
Many of the ZIP code areas in Sedgwick County extend into neighboring counties. The ZIP code population data on the map includes people who live in other counties, but the number of tests and cases only include Sedgwick County residents. The testing rate and the case rate per population includes Sedgwick County residents who were tested compared with the total population of the ZIP code, including other counties.
The Butler County Health Department has its own ZIP code map. Its data is also updated on Mondays. Information on active and total cases in Butler County is included on the list below for three ZIP codes.
Names of towns from other counties are included solely as a reference for the relative location of the ZIP code.
