Coronavirus ZIP code map for Sedgwick County shows improvement in positive test rate
Last week’s improvement in the positive coronavirus test percentage is reflected in the ZIP code data for the Wichita area.
A map from the Sedgwick County Health Department breaks down coronavirus testing and positive COVID-19 cases by ZIP code. The online ZIP code map’s data is updated on Mondays. It can be accessed at www.sedgwickcounty.org/covid-19/.
Sedgwick County had 10 ZIP codes with positive test rates above 10% last week, which is calculated by dividing the number of new cases by new tests. That included parts of Wichita, as well as Andale, Colwich, Garden Plain, Goddard, Maize, the Peck area and Valley Center. The previous week, 21 ZIP codes were above 10%.
The highest positive test percentage was in the 67203 ZIP code with 35.73%. It also had the most new cases at 144. The ZIP code includes the Riverside area and parts of Delano, as well as areas farther north and west. It is generally bounded by Douglas, Main, 21st Street and West Street.
It is unclear how many of those cases were connected to a coronavirus cluster at the Sedgwick County Jail, which is in the 67203 ZIP code.
The health department on Monday reported 6,893 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. There were 542 new cases since last Monday, compared with 946 last week and 460 the week before.
A full list of ZIP codes in Sedgwick County is available below, including the population, number of tests administered, confirmed cases and testing rate per 10,000 people. The county’s online map does not list the number of new tests, new cases, positive test percentage or the rate of cases per 10,000 population. The Eagle calculated those values using the number of cases listed in county data on Monday and Aug. 24.
Testing rates based on 20 or fewer tests are considered unreliable by the county health department. For total tests and total confirmed cases, if a ZIP code has five or fewer of either category, the county does not report the exact number.
Two ZIP codes — for McConnell Air Force Base and Wichita State University — do not have data because they have no population. County officials have said that members of the military who live in on-base housing are included in the surrounding 67210 ZIP code.
Many of the ZIP code areas in Sedgwick County extend into neighboring counties. The ZIP code population data on the map includes people who live in other counties, but the number of tests and cases only include Sedgwick County residents. The testing rate and the case rate per population includes Sedgwick County residents who were tested compared with the total population of the ZIP code, including other counties.
The Butler County Health Department has its own ZIP code map. Its data is also updated on Mondays. Information on active and total cases in Butler County is included on the list below for three ZIP codes.
Names of towns from other counties are included solely as a reference for the relative location of the ZIP code.
