Coronavirus

After positive test rates spiked last week, 21 ZIP codes passed 10% in the Wichita area

Last week’s increases in several coronavirus pandemic indicators are reflected in the ZIP code data for the Wichita area.

A map from the Sedgwick County Health Department breaks down coronavirus testing and positive COVID-19 cases by ZIP code. The online ZIP code map’s data is updated on Mondays. It can be accessed at www.sedgwickcounty.org/covid-19/.

Sedgwick County had 21 ZIP codes with positive test rates above 10% last week, which is calculated by dividing the number of new cases by new tests. That included parts of Wichita, as well as Derby, Goddard, Clearwater, Colwich, Garden Plain, Bel Aire and Mount Hope. The previous week, a dozen ZIP codes were above 10%.

The highest positive test percentage was in the 67203 ZIP code, which was just over 28%. It also had the most new cases at 137. The ZIP code includes the Riverside area and parts of Delano, as well as areas farther north and west. It is generally bounded by Douglas, Main, 21st Street and West Street.

Mass testing at the Sedgwick County Jail contributed to a spike in several pandemic indicators last week, especially the countywide positive test percentage. As of Monday’s report, the 14-day countywide positive test rate was 12.24%. County officials said on Tuesday that it is unclear exactly how much of the increase was due to the jail outbreak.

It is also unclear how the jail cluster’s cases were distributed in the community. The jail is in the 67203 ZIP code, and the jail’s cases increased by more than that ZIP code’s increase.

The health department on Monday reported 6,351 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. There were 946 new cases since last Monday, which was more than double the 460 new cases reported in the previous week.

One new death was reported last week. The health department stopped reporting active cases and recoveries last week.

A full list of ZIP codes in Sedgwick County is available below, including the population, number of tests administered, confirmed cases and testing rate per 10,000 people. The county’s online map does not list the number of new tests, new cases, positive test percentage or the rate of cases per 10,000 population. The Eagle calculated those values using the number of cases listed in county data on Monday and Aug. 17.

Testing rates based on 20 or fewer tests are considered unreliable by the county health department. For total tests and total confirmed cases, if a ZIP code has five or fewer of either category, the county does not report the exact number.

Two ZIP codes — for McConnell Air Force Base and Wichita State University — do not have data because they have no population. County officials have said that members of the military who live in on-base housing are included in the surrounding 67210 ZIP code.

Many of the ZIP code areas in Sedgwick County extend into neighboring counties. The ZIP code population data on the map includes people who live in other counties, but the number of tests and cases only include Sedgwick County residents. The testing rate and the case rate per population includes Sedgwick County residents who were tested compared with the total population of the ZIP code, including other counties.

The Butler County Health Department has its own ZIP code map. Its data is also updated on Mondays. Information on active and total cases in Butler County is included on the list below for three ZIP codes.

Names of towns from other counties are included solely as a reference for the relative location of the ZIP code.
