Coronavirus

What’s the latest positive coronavirus test rate by ZIP code in the Wichita area?

As schools in Kansas consider reopening in-person or online, the percentage of coronavirus tests that come back positive for COVID-19 has been an important indicator.

The Kansas State Department of Education recommends moving middle and high school classes online when the positive test rate exceeds 10%. The guide suggests making all school remote at 15%.

The Eagle calculated an estimated positive test percentage for ZIP codes by dividing new cases by new tests for last week.

A map from the Sedgwick County Health Department breaks down coronavirus testing and positive COVID-19 cases by ZIP code. The online ZIP code map’s data is updated on Mondays. It can be accessed at www.sedgwickcounty.org/covid-19/.

There were 12 ZIP codes in Wichita and the suburban towns with positive test rates above 10%. They were the 67050 code for Garden Plain, 67067 in Kechi, Mount Hope’s 67108, the 67204 code in Wichita and Park City, the 67220 code for Bel Aire and Wichita, and the Wichita codes of 67203, 67209, 67210, 67211, 67213, 67214 and 67217.

The 67203 ZIP code in Wichita, which has had 458 residents test positive for the coronavirus disease, has the most confirmed cases in the county for the seventh consecutive week. The ZIP code includes the Riverside area and parts of Delano, as well as areas farther north and west. It is generally bounded by Douglas, Main, 21st Street and West Street.

It also had the biggest increase in actual cases at 46 new cases over the last week.

Sedgwick County has 18 ZIP codes with at least 100 cases, including the Derby and Haysville ZIP codes, as well as three Wichita ZIP codes that stretch into Bel Aire and Park City. The number of ZIP codes with at least 100 cases was also 18 a week ago.

The health department on Monday reported 5,405 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. There were 460 new cases since last Monday

Monday’s report from the county health department also included 2,743 active cases, 2,615 recoveries and 47 deaths. Those were a 3.6% decrease in active cases over one week, a 27.2% increase in recoveries and a 6.4% increase in deaths. Those statistics are not listed on the ZIP code map.

The health department decided on Tuesday to stop reporting active cases and recoveries.

A full list of ZIP codes in Sedgwick County is available below, including the population, number of tests administered, confirmed cases and testing rate per 10,000 people. The county’s online map does not list the number of new tests, new cases, positive test percentage or the rate of cases per 10,000 population. The Eagle calculated those values using the number of cases listed in county data on Monday and Aug. 10.

Testing rates based on 20 or fewer tests are considered unreliable by the county health department. For total tests and total confirmed cases, if a ZIP code has five or fewer of either category, the county does not report the exact number.

Two ZIP codes — for McConnell Air Force Base and Wichita State University — do not have data because they have no population. County officials have said that members of the military who live in on-base housing are included in the surrounding 67210 ZIP code.

Many of the ZIP code areas in Sedgwick County extend into neighboring counties. The ZIP code population data on the map includes people who live in other counties, but the number of tests and cases only include Sedgwick County residents. The testing rate and the case rate per population includes Sedgwick County residents who were tested compared with the total population of the ZIP code, including other counties.

The Butler County Health Department has its own ZIP code map. Its data is also updated on Mondays. Information on active and total cases in Butler County is included on the list below for three ZIP codes.

Names of towns from other counties are included solely as a reference for the relative location of the ZIP code.
