Coronavirus updates: Sedgwick County sees two additional deaths

The Sedgwick County Health Department on Tuesday reported two additional deaths from COVID-19, bringing the total to 46.

New cases increased by 45 to 4,990.

The death to known cases rate, which is also called the case fatality rate, is about 0.9% in Sedgwick County. Statewide, the rate is about 1.2% based on 387 deaths and 31,730 known cases. The U.S. has an observed case fatality rate of 3.2% based on figures from Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.

Based on the case fatality rate, the U.S. is ranked 12th in the world, according to the university. No. 1 is the United Kingdom with 14.9%.

Of the 45 new cases, 17 happened in the 40-59 age group, which has the second-most cases at 1,414. The 20-39 age group saw an increase of 15 cases. That age group has the most cases with 2,055.

Most of the Sedgwick County deaths have been attributed to clusters at long-term nursing facilities. The ages of deaths also skew to an older population, although the exact figures are not regularly reported.

Sedgwick County spokesperson Kate Flavin said the Health Department is working on putting more specific death information on its dashboard. She said it could be available by the end of the month.
