Coronavirus updates: KDHE reporting more than 1,000 new cases, seven deaths

Kansas reported seven more COVID-19 deaths and more than a thousand new confirmed cases of the disease over the weekend. In Sedgwick County, the cumulative case count now tops 5,200.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Monday reported 1,092 new coronavirus infections, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases statewide to 31,730. The new figure is a 3.56% increase since Friday.

Deaths from the disease now total 387, up 1.8% since Friday. People 85 and older continue to account for the most fatalities, with 133 deaths across the state.

People aged 25-34 account for the largest portion of overall infections in the state, with 19.1% or 6,067 cases, KDHE reported.

Ages 18-24 account for the second most — 17.8%, or 5,640 cases.

When it comes to hospitalizations, KDHE on Monday reported 1,911 statewide and 1,319 discharges. Just over a fourth of patients — 534 — were admitted to the intensive care unit. About 10% needed a ventilator to breathe.

Kansas’ testing rate is currently 112 per 1,000 members of the population. So far, there have been 326,669 tests conducted statewide. Of those, 294,939 came back negative.

Sedgwick County case count

On Monday, the KDHE reported 5,207 positive coronavirus cases in the Wichita area. The Sedgwick County Health Department reported 4,945 positive cases. Discrepancies between state and local data can be due to delays in reporting between the two public health agencies, officials have said.

Sedgwick County’s 14-day rolling average of positive tests is 10.6%, down from a high of 13.99% on July 23.

According to the KDHE’s figures, Sedgwick County has the second-most infections in the state, trailing behind only Johnson County, which reported 5,913 cases of the disease.

Sedgwick County reported no new deaths over the weekend. There are 2,845 active infections and 2,056 recoveries, according to the county’s website. So far 62,290 people have been tested.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Sedgwick County are down week over week. Local health officials reported 64 patients on Monday, compared to 72 a week ago. Twenty-eight patients were in ICU on Monday, compared to 34 on Aug. 3.

Wichita Wurlitzer cancels 2020-2021 season shows

Wichita Wurlitzer announced Monday that it is canceling all shows its upcoming season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

WichitaTix will be contacting current ticket holders, who can either donate the value of their tickets to the organization or request a refund.

The Wichita Wurlitzer, currently located in Century II’s Exhibition Hall, was originally installed in the New York Paramount Theatre in Times Square. It premiered in New York in 1926 and in Wichita in 1972. More information about the instrument and shows is available at www.wichitawurlitzer.org.
